Vormsi Talumuuseum

Vormsi is an island where Swedes lived for centuries. The earliest known documents already mention settlement in the 13th century. Vormsi was a Swedish-speaking island; for example, in 1934 there were 2,393 Swedes and 122 Estonians living there.

The Vormsi Farm Museum represents a typical pre–Second World War Vormsi-Swedish farm, along with everything associated with it. The farm has been restored using old photographs and written sources, as well as the memories of people born on Vormsi who fled to Sweden during the war.

At the museum, visitors can see authentically renovated thatched-roof buildings, a large collection of household items and clothing, and photo exhibitions depicting life on Vormsi and in other Coastal Swedish areas. Many everyday items differed in the island’s isolated culture from what was common on the mainland, whether it was Vormsi clothing traditions, beehives, or shoulder yokes. One of the museum’s highlights is a fully functional traditional smoke sauna, where the sauna stove is heated on some Saturdays.

For many centuries, the Coastal Swedish areas preserved their distinctive culture and way of life. Although times have changed on Vormsi and much is different today, Coastal Swedish culture continues to live on at the Vormsi Farm Museum.

The Pearse Farm (Pearsgården) of the Vormsi Farm Museum is located in Sviby village, one kilometre from the harbour in the direction of Hullo. The museum sells Vormsi handicrafts, souvenirs, and books related to Vormsi.
